The D Team are taking part in the 2010 Timbuktu rally. The rally sees them driving from Plymouth all the way to, yep, you guessed it. Timbuktu in North Africa. Entrants have to buy a cheap vehicle to take them all the way. At the end the vehicles (whatever state they're in) will then be auctioned off for charity.
The D Team will be travelling from Plymouth to Timbuktu in a Bedford Rascal (yeah, good luck with that!). The aim of the site was to allow them to keep followers informed of their progress before and after the event. Whilst they were on the road we wanted them to be able to send regular updates on events, photos or blog posts. With the events and location we created a fun Twilio app that updates content on the site depending on the content of a text message. We chose Twilio and text messaging due to the lack of good mobile reception enroute.
Uploading photos and managing their Twitter, Facebook and Posterous feeds are done via a custom built Django Web App.
